Overview

This course provides the prospective coach with an understanding of the organization and administrative responsibilities that are involved in coaching an athletic team at the high school level. Although the course caters to the high school coach, the same situations exist at the college/university level but are more involved in terms of numbers, finances, and facilities.

Course Objectives

  • Identify the broad range of organization and administrative responsibilities that are involved in coaching athletics and athletic teams.
  • Provide exposure to the history and development of athletics in the United States, to understand the place of athletics in the education setting and why athletic controls evolved and the function of local, conference, state and national associations.
  • To understand and appreciate the personal qualities, responsibilities and the professional preparation that is important for the coach to succeed.
  • Become familiar with management functions, policy development, legal considerations, liabilities, insurance, medical disciplinary and safety responsibilities.
  • Recognize the importance of the administrative or non coaching phase involving awards, facilities, contracts, contests, officials, travel and finances.
  • Understand school and community relations, how to organize practice (pre-season, in season, off season), and contest and post contest and season ending responsibilities.

Assignments

The ten assignments will consist of written papers which should follow the instructions indicated for each paper. Papers should be typed. Do your own work.

Examinations

There will be four examinations: the first covering the first six chapters, the second over chapters seven through fourteen, the third on chapters fifteen through twenty-three and the final test over the final seven chapters. The final test is not a comprehensive exam. All four exams will consist of ten to twenty multiple choice questions (covered as chapter objectives), around twenty or thirty true or false, with the remainder essay for a total of seventy points per test.

Grades

There are two components to the course grade. The first component is four tests at intervals throughout the course. The second component will consist of ten written assignments. The written assignments will relate to topics covered in the course.
