Driver Education Endorsement
The University of Northern Iowa offers a course sequence that leads to the Driver Education Endorsement. Teachers may earn the Driver Education (5-12) Endorsement by completing nine units of credit that includes coursework in accident prevention, drug and alcohol abuse, vehicle safety and behind-the-wheel driving.
For licensed secondary teachers*, completion of the courses indicated in the program of study qualifies individuals to teach both the classroom and behind-the-wheel components of driver education.
* If preparation for the initial teaching license was at the elementary level, completion of student teaching in driver education at the secondary level is also required. However, for licensed elementary teachers who have at least two years of teaching experience, the secondary student teaching requirement may be met by completing the Experience in Safety Education course and providing a letter that documents the number of years of classroom experience. Visit the UNI Registrar's Teacher Licensure Information page for more information and resources about teacher licensure.
Course delivery
Courses in this program are offered via interactive video conferencing methods (including Adobe Connect), with in-car and in-person experiences as arranged. Some coursework is offered online using eLearning, a Blackboard learning management system requiring Internet access and a web browser.
While most students encounter very few technical difficulties with our online courses, our team of support specialists is available to assist you as needed.
