Science Education (MA)
The University of Northern Iowa offers many of the courses required for the Master of Arts in Science Education via distance learning to teacher cohorts. This program integrates theory, application and content, allowing teachers to update pedagogy as well as add endorsement areas to their teaching licenses or update content knowledge in their specialty areas. Learn how to teach science in a way that helps students construct their knowledge within an inquiry framework. SCI ED 5500 courses vary from semester to semester, sometimes focusing on pedagogy and sometimes offering one-hour updates on content.
New cohort to begin Summer 2013
- Designed for K-12 science teachers, you have the option of an emphasis in Physics or Earth Science; or you may find that a structure with no subject-specific emphasis fits your needs best.
- Most students in the program are teacher practitioners. While teacher licensure is not required for program acceptance, students without a current teaching license are strongly encouraged to complete the requirements for licensure concurrently with their degree.
- This program builds a strong foundation in science content knowledge to complement research-based pedagogical practices. Students in the cohort will also be apprised of opportunities to earn credits toward endorsements in Earth Science, Physics, Biology and Chemistry.
- Graduates are prepared to continue on in the classroom as highly qualified practitioners. Many also continue with additional education, move into administration, Area Education Agencies or a state agency as science consultants or other leadership positions. Several have become National Board certified teachers. Many are professionally active in state science teaching organizations and conferences.
Convenient format and delivery
Designed for in-service teachers, the program format and schedule provides the convenience and flexibility to fit into your busy life. Using a cohort model, groups of students complete the core coursework together over a two-year period. Click on the "Program Schedule" tab above for more course delivery information. Additional electives are taken concurrently or in subsequent semesters in order to complete the program.
What students are saying
"The MA in Science Education program at UNI is truly a quality program. This is not the kind of program where you just take a list of classes and get your diploma. They challenge and inspire your thinking so you truly become a better person and professional."
"My class work inspired me to reach out and get involved in science in many different directions."
"I have really grown as an educator and as a person from the wonderful experiences I have had (and will continue to have)! I had the amazing opportunity to be involved in a two-week internship at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas."
