Mathematics for the Middle Grades (4-8) (MA)
The Department of Mathematics at the University of Northern Iowa offers a Master of Arts program in Mathematics for the Middle Grades. The purpose of the program is two-fold — to develop highly-trained, knowledgeable teachers of mathematics at the middle grades level (grades 4-8) who possess the ability, insight, confidence and commitment to implement mathematics programs as envisioned by the NCTM Standards (1989, 1992, 1995, 2000).

The Mathematics for the Middle Grades program, leading to a Master of Arts in Mathematics, is built around a core foundation of strategies which include the following:

Qualifications and selection
You are expected to be certified and have experience teaching mathematics. A commitment to change, a willingness to incorporate new activities and approaches in the classroom, involvement in professional growth opportunities and administrative support for district leadership are considered in the selection process. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for admission into the program.
Convenient course delivery
Fall and spring courses in this program are offered online using eLearning, a Blackboard learning management system requiring Internet access and a web browser. While most students encounter very few technical difficulties with our online courses, our team of support specialists is available to assist you as needed.
Summer sessions include some in-person instruction at UNI, set on a beautiful 900-acre campus. The city of Cedar Falls is a charming community, complete with a nationally recognized historic downtown, more than 100 miles of recreational trails, and a variety of cultural and entertainment experiences within walking distance of downtown.
