UNI Speech and Debate Teams end semester triumphantly

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- University of Northern Iowa Individual Events and Debate Teams finished the semester with tournaments in Minnesota.

The Individual Events Team traveled to the Twin Cities Forensic League Tournament #3 on Dec. 2, coming home with the following awards:

Anna McDermott, a sophomore political science major from Des Moines, took first place for poetry interpretation, and qualified for the American Forensic Association Tournament in the spring.

Emma Peterson, a sophomore communication/electronic media major from Ankeny, won second place for poetry interpretation, qualifying for the American Forensic Association Tornament, and fourth place for informative speaking, qualifying for the National Forensic Association Tournament in the spring.

Ashlee Lopez, a senior communication major from Bettendorf, took fourth place for informative speaking and qualified for the National Forensic Association Tournament.

Ali Horsted, a junior communication major from Harrisburg, S.D., was a finalist in prose interpretation; and Jakob Elmquist, a freshman English major from Ankeny, was finalist in impromptu speaking.

Horsted and McDermott teamed up to take third place in duo interpretation.

The Debate Team traveled to the Macalester College Tournament in St. Paul, Minn., on the weekend of Dec. 6-7, achieving the following results:

As a team, Jeramaiah Kouba, a senior English major from Tama; Chris Outzen, a sophomore communication major from North Clinton; and Rhonda Greenway, a freshman political communication and philosophy major from Van Meter, took first place in the novice division.

Greenway was also first speaker in the novice division. Raechel Sittig, a senior communication and theatre arts major from Waterloo, and Ryan Penning, a senior communication and theatre arts major from Algona, took second and third speaker, respectively, in the novice division. Kouba, Sittig and Penning, though not regular members of the UNI Debate team, come from Kelsey Harr's argumentation and debate class.

Katherine Lavelle, UNI assistant professor of communication studies, is director of forensics; Harr, UNI instructor in communication studies, and Catherine Palczewski, UNI professor of communication studies, are directors of debate; and Rebecca Buel, instructor in communication studies, is director of individual events. Courtney Wright and Adam Gonzalez are graduate teaching assistants for the teams.
