CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's Forensics Team has opened its season by hosting two tournaments.
During the weekend of Sept. 20-22, the UNI Debate Team hosted the Ulrich Season Opener, a policy debate tournament that featured 17 schools and 55 individual teams. States represented at the tournament included Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Texas.
Wichita State won the varsity division, Kansas State won junior varsity and Illinois State won the novice division. Alexandria Chase, a freshman English major from Cherokee, earned second place speaker honors in the novice division, competing with a student from the University of Illinois.
The UNI Speech Team hosted a Mid-America Forensics League tournament (MAFL) with Wartburg College on Sept. 27 and 28. During the UNI portion of the swing, Emma Peterson, a sophomore communication/electronic media major from Ankeny; Anna McDermott, a sophomore political science major from Des Moines; and Ali Horsted, a junior communication major from Harrisburg, S.D., were in the finals for poetry interpretation, placing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Horsted and McDermott placed fourth in duo interpretation, and Horsted was sixth in prose interpretation. Chris Outzen, a sophomore communication major from North Clinton, placed sixth in program oral interpretation.
During the Wartburg tournament, Ashlee Lopez, a senior communication major from Bettendorf, won poetry interpretation and Yaw Kyeremateng, a freshman accounting major from Cedar Falls, placed third. Horsted placed sixth in prose interpretation.
During the MAFL, the Debate Team traveled to Wichita State. Chase was third seed in the novice division with a debater from Johnson County Community College. They earned second place overall.
