CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—Camp Multimedia (CMM), a digital media summer camp for high school students based at the University of Northern Iowa, will expand to two weeks this summer, and will offer a residential experience option with overnight stays in UNI dormitories.
The camp offers intense instruction from UNI media professors and industry professionals. Using Photoshop, Flash, After Effects, and digital video editing, students learn how to integrate images, 2-D and 3-D animation, and video together in professional-level projects. Besides a week of digital media production, students will now have the opportunity to learn basic multimedia programming skills during a second week of CMM. Taught by computer science professors at UNI, students will learn how computers represent digital images and sounds, manipulate media and create customized effects.
''There is no other summer camp like this in the Midwest for high school students,'' said Bettina Fabos, UNI visual communication professor. ''We have incredible industry professionals who lend their talents to Camp Multimedia, and who make an inspiring environment for creative young people interested in digital media.''
''Camp Multimedia is a top-notch multimedia experience for young people in Iowa,'' Fabos said.
The camp draws on experts from across the country and the Cedar Valley. Local media professionals include designers, developers, and producers from Spinutech, Phantom EFX, Mudd Advertising, Edgecore, Darning Pixels, and Hellman Advertising.
''The Cedar Valley is emerging as a center of multimedia production. Camp Multimedia will also connect these media production businesses with young people who could become their future employees,'' Fabos said.
Camp Multimedia will be held June 15-19 (Digital Media) and June 22-26 (Media Computation). Students can choose to attend either camp week or both. CMM uses the advanced media lab facilities in UNI's Lang Hall.
Camp Multimedia costs $350 for each week-long experience, not including the room and board option (add $325). More details and registration forms are available at www.campmultimedia.com. Participants may also receive one hour of UNI college credit for each week of the camp ($240 per UNI credit).
