Sunday, October 26, 2008 Victories Continue for the UNI Forensics Team CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Debate Team continued its season by traveling to Kansas City, Kansas Community College's Blue Devil Debate Tournament October 10-12.
In a field of 17 teams, Alexandria Chase, a freshman English major from Cherokee, and Rhonda Greenway, a freshman political communication and philosophy major from Van Meter, were semifinalists in the novice division.
The Individual Events Team traveled to the Larry Schnoor Invitational at Minnesota State University-Mankato on Oct. 18, where Ashlee Lopez, a senior communication major from Bettendorf, won second place in program oral interpretation and first place in poetry interpretation. Jakob Elmquist, a freshman English major from Ankeny, won sixth place in poetry interpretation and qualified for the National Forensics Association. Chris Outzen, a sophomore communication major from North Clinton, was a semifinalist in impromptu speaking.
The Speech Team also attended the Bill Robertz Invitational at Gustavus Adolphus College on Oct. 19. Lopez won third place in program oral interpretation and poetry interpretation, qualified for the American Forensics Association, and was a semifinalist in impromptu speaking.
Elmquist won sixth place in poetry interpretation, and Outzen won sixth place in impromptu speaking and qualified for the National Forensics Association.
The Debate Team is coached by Kelsey Harr, UNI instructor in communication studies, and Catherine Palczewski, UNI professor of communication studies. The Individual Events Team is coached by Rebecca Buel, UNI instructor in communication studies. Katherine Lavelle, UNI assistant professor of communication, is director of forensics.
