Speech and Debate Teams Finish Strong Season for UNI Forensics

The Speech and Debate teams completed their 2013-2014 seasons with strong finishes in national competitions.

Debate Team

On the Debate team,  Zach Simonson and Abbie Shew made it to the Triple Octafinalists round of the CEDA (Cross Examination Debate Association) national tournament at Indiana University, March 21-24. Simonson is a senior Political Communication major from Ottumwa, Iowa, and Shew is a junior from Rosemount, Minnesota, majoring in Biology and Philosophy.

Speech Team

On the Speech team, UNI Speech placed 10th as a team at the 2014 AFA-NIET, April 4-7 in Tempe, Arizona! This is the third year in a row that the team has finished 10th in the nation at the American Forensic Association - National Individual Events Tournament. Here are the individual results:

*Quarter-finalist: Ryan Courtney - POI (Program Oral Interpretation)


April 18-21,  UNI Speech sent senior student Zoe Russell to the NFA National Championship tournament at Eastern Michigan University to close out her competitive forensics career. Russell is a senior Communication major. Here are the results:

 *Quarter-finalist: Zoe Russell - Informative Speaking

*5th PLACE TEAM SWEEPSTAKES IN PRESIDENT'S DIVISION III WITH ONLY ONE COMPETITOR!!!



Congratulations to the UNI Forensics squad, their coaches Rebecca Buel and Richard Tews, and Director of Forensics John Fritch. The 2013-14 UNI Speech and Debate seasons are in the books!
