Shew and Simonson Advance to Triple Octafinals at CEDA Nationals Debate Tournament
The UNI debate team of Abbie Shew and Zach Simonson were 5-3 in preliminary rounds, defeating teams from Kansas and West Virginia, at the CEDA Nationals, the largest national debate tournament in policy debate. The Kansas teams that they defeated both made it to elimination rounds. Zach and Abbie's record was strong enough for them to advance to the triple octafinals, where they lost to 12th seed, Towson University. We are extremely proud of Abbie and Zach's great showing at CEDA. Abbie is a first year collegiate debater, and is in her first full year of policy debate. Zach is a former NDT qualifier for UNI.
They are the first UNI team to clear at CEDA Nationals since 2008! Shew and Simonson are coached by Director of Debate Richard Tews and Graduate Teaching Assistant Allie Chase.
The CEDA Nationals were held March 23-26, 2013 at Idaho State University, with 144 teams from 59 schools competing. Shew and Simonson were the only team from a university or college in Iowa to compete in the CEDA Nationals.
The debate team will take a break from competition, but start work on next year's topic in two months.
