Vernacular image-making related to conflict(s) in the public sphere. My areas of focus are Northern Ireland and the Palestinian West Bank. Texts and symbols in these areas come freighted with meaning as are the relationships of these visual artifacts, these painted words and images, to each other.
How texts and media may work together. "The domains of word and image are like two countries that speak different languages but that have a long history of mutual migration, cultural exchange, and other forms of intercourse." From: Robert Nelson and Richard Shiff, Critical Terms for Art History. U of Chicago Press 1996. Nelson and Shiff are discussing W. J. T. Mitchell's work. I believe especially his 1987 book, Image, Text and Ideology.
