Teaching Interests

My passion and academic interests lie in relational communication. I continue to study, learn about, and be intrigued by how human relationships work and the role our own communication and others' communication (both verbally and nonverbally) play in the development, maintenance, and deterioration of relationships. I enjoy studying and teaching about this topic in the contexts of friendship, romantic, family, and work relationships. I also love teaching students how to become better writers and speakers. These two skills are essential in all aspects of our life, not just in one's future career.

Courses Taught

Interpersonal Communication, Advanced Interpersonal Communication, Communication and Conflict Management, Family Communication, Cornerstone and Oral Communication

I feel it is an honor and privilege to advise undergraduate students and guide them as they work toward completion of their respective major/minor. I'm an Iowa girl! I lived in several Iowa towns while growing up but have lived in the Cedar Valley the longest. I love the people and beauty of our state. I have been married to Eric for 25 years and we have two wonderful daughters and one adorable dog. I love to read, cook, run, work in my yard, hike, bike, and kayak all while spending time with family and friends. I like college sports and cheer for both the Panthers AND the Hawkeyes!
I also conduct communication trainings and workshops for companies and organizations. I specialize in teaching professional communication skills (listening, workplace communication, and public speaking), improving workplace and other types of organizational relationships, and teaching conflict management.
I also believe in participating in our community to help make it a better place for all of us to  work and live. I have served on the Family YMCA Board of Directors, Friends of Hospice Advisory Board, Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls, Northeast Iowa Community Foundation Board of Directors, WB Small Trust Board of Directors, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and have been involved with the Waterloo Community School District in several capacities.
