Students and faculty from the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders traveled to Athens, Greece this summer to attend the 28th World Congress of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP). Graduate students, Heidi Hansen, McKenzie Main, Maura Tunney and Jacayla Vittetoe along with Professor Ken Bleile and Clinical Supervisor Alison Lemke, represented the University of Northern Iowa and the United States, one of 48 countries in attendance at the congress.

IALP is the oldest organization representing those involved with scientific, educational and professional issues related to communication, language, voice, speech, hearing and swallowing sciences and disorders in children and adults. The association was founded in 1924 and holds its scientific congresses every three years.

While in Athens, the students and faculty had the opportunity to see many historic sites including the Acropolis, home to the famous Parthenon, Temple of Athena Nike, Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus and the Erechtheum. Another highlight was watching the USA Men’s National Team play basketball against Greece at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex. Additionally, they enjoyed traditional Greek cuisine, swam in the Aegean Sea and traveled to the island of Hydra.
