College Portrait: Studying at UNI
The University of Northern Iowa offers more than 120 undergraduate majors and a variety of graduate programs. You will find high academic standards combined with personal attention from faculty. At UNI, you are never just a number. Your professors will make time for one-on-one meetings with you, whether it’s to discuss projects after class, to do research together, or in extra-curricular activities. Our student faculty ratio is an enviable 16 to 1.
UNI's undergraduate academic experience is built on the foundation of our Liberal
Arts Core (LAC). The Liberal Arts Core is
a set of core classes that
exposes students to broad areas of knowledge in the natural sciences, social
sciences, humanities and
fine arts. It also focuses on the development of students writing, speaking
and quantitative skills. The LAC gives students the opportunity to develop
the tools, knowledge, and values that will help them lead thoughtful, creative
and productive life after graduation and to become lifelong learners and
engaged citizens, who are prepared to live and work in a truly multi-cultural
and
global society.
