College Portrait: Advising and Careers
The University of Northern Iowa provides students with a variety of resources for exploring career directions and preparing for their careers after graduation.
The Office of Academic Advising works with students who are deciding on a major. Advisors from the office offer one-on-one assistance with the decision-making process as well as career interest inventories and printed and on-line major and career information.
Once students have declared a major—either at new student orientation or when they have completed a Declaration of Major form—they are assigned to an advisor for their academic department, who will help them plan their coursework to meet the requirements for graduation.
The Office of Career Services provides programs and services to help students to
- explore career directions
- gain career-related experience, including cooperative education and internships
- work with professional staff and peer career advisors to write effective resumes and cover letters and develop skills for job interviews
- connect with employers through on-campus fairs and on-line job listings
Students interested in exploring options for continuing their education after their bachelor’s degree will find assistance from their major advisors, faculty and department contacts for pre-professional programs, and Career Services.
