Nancy earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Iowa State University in 1965. She taught special education in Harlan for one year before raising three sons and a daughter as a stay-at-home mother for 16 years. She worked as a partner with her husband, Dave, on their diversified farming operation, raising corn, soybeans, hay, hogs and cattle on several hundred acres of Iowa farmland. Nancy earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. She then taught junior high school for four years, followed by 13 years as the Education and Resource Director for Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan. She was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1994. She has served as assistant majority leader; assistant minority leader; and chair of the Education, Human Resources and International Relations committees and the Education Appropriations committee. Nancy has served on several local, state and national boards and committees.
