John is the superintendent of schools for the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District. Collaborating with business and industry, elected officials and higher education, John is leading the charge to vision and make operational a new structure of learning grounded in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The district is working to seamlessly embed technology into instruction and use social media to break down classroom silos, connecting learners globally. John was appointed by the Governor to the STEM Advisory Council, Executive Committee, was elected chair of the Governor’s STEM Technology-Enhanced Instruction for Global Learning Work Group and is a member of the Governor’s STEM Advisory Committee, Subcommittee: Regional Networks Design & Governance. John chairs the STEM Advisory work group tasked with identifying barriers to making high speed broadband internet accessible statewide. John is also a member of Iowa Department of Education Competency Based Education Design Team and the Rural Iowa Task Force led by Iowa Rep. Josh Byrnes. John earned a bachelor’s degree from Morningside College, a master’s degree in education from Drake University and a certificate of advanced studies from Iowa State University. John and his wife of 32 years, Pam, have two grown children, son Adam and daughter Emily.
