Cruise the Web to the College of Ed's Home Page

If you can access the World Wide Web, you can access an abundance of information about the University of Northern Iowa College of Education. As of summer, 1995, the College is on the Web at http://www.uni.edu/coe.

"Being on the Web allows the College of Education to communicate with alumni across the state and around the world," says Matthew Kollasch, Director of Instructional Resources and Technology Services, one of the College's services. "Alumni and prospective students can get information on all of the College's departments and know what's going on. We plan to keep the information current and make this a living document for the readers."

Kollasch worked with the UNI Center for Educational Technology to create a Home Page for the College. He also coordinated entrance to the web so that each College department provides information for the page. Each page also includes a button to click on to automatically send an e-mail message to each department or to the Dean's office.

The College's web information includes material on the Office of the Dean; all departments; all College institutes, centers, and services; projects; and staff and faculty. So, if you click on the Institutes, Centers, and Services selection, you can check out the Orava Project in Bratislava and get linked up with Comenius University in Bratislava, or see images of Slovakia.

The College hopes to offer its Web users more than straight information about the College and its projects. Kollasch explains that the Web is a way of linking people with ideas and resources. Therefore, with Web assistance, he sees the College becoming a clearing house or Education Index for finding good education sites on the Web. "With all our faculty expertise, we can provide Web users with resources - publications, events, people - in all areas the College covers from wellness, to ed psych to international student teaching," says Dean Thomas Switzer. Northern Iowa alumni and others teaching in public schools with Web access will now have instant access to University expertise.

Kollasch predicts that the College's Web pages will mature a lot during this academic year. "All components of the College are now represented in some way on the College's Web pages, and each site can add as much information as it wants to." The College's Web pages are being put to good use. For instance, in just one week in August 156 requests for information were made, including one from New Zealand and one from Canada.

Northern Iowa's other colleges also have World Wide Web pages as does the University itself. The University's main Web address is http://www.uni.edu/. The College invites you to visit its World Wide Web pages.
