Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments Endorsement Program
 
The Department of Special Education at the University of Northern Iowa is offering the Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) Endorsement program.  This program will lead to endorsement for teaching students with visual impairments from birth to 21.  The students must complete the requirements for an early childhood, elementary, or secondary education major at the BA level to be enrolled in this program.
 
Tuition reimbursement will be available to qualifying students with funding provided by the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School.
 
Since the proposed program will run more than one year in duration, it will be operated as a cohort group model with the proposed courses offered sequentially.  The order of these courses is based upon the progression of skills taught in the courses.  The following schedule reflects the sequence and will be applied to students enrolled beginning with the Summer 2005 semester.

Summer 2005 Braille Learning and Tactile Communication I 3 Hours
Fall 2005 Introduction to Visual Impairments  3 Hours
Fall 2005 Anatomy of the Eye and Educational Implications of Low Vision 3 Hours
Spring 2006 Foundation of Orientation and Mobility 3 Hours
Spring 2006 Braille Learning and Tactile Communication II 3 Hours
Summer 2006 Assistive Technology for Students with Visual Impairments

 

 2 Hours
Fall 2006 Teaching Students who are Visually Impaired with Multiple  Disabilities 2 Hours
Fall 2006 Methods of Teaching Students with Visual Impairments 3 Hours

Note that the student teaching will begin in the Spring 2006 semester and will be completed by the Fall 2006 semester.  Depending on student schedules and other needs, the sequence of the courses and/or requirements for the classes may vary.
