Director of Special Education

Entry point for this endorsement is during the Fall semester.

Students who hold or will be holding a Specialist degree or Masters plus thirty-two (32) semester hours of planned graduate study in Administration or Special Education and hold or meet the requirements for Supervisor of Special Education - Instructional may receive the Director of Special Education Endorsement by successfully completing the following program from the University of Northern Iowa.

Option 1: A Doctor of Education - Special Education administration intensive study area.
Option 2: A Specialist in Education - Special Education supervision/administrator emphasis plus 12 graduate semester hours of educational administration coursework.
Option 3: A Master's Degree with a Special Education instructional for K-6 and 7-12 endorsement plus thirty-two (32) semester hours of planned study in special education administration. These hours may have been a part of, or in addition to, the degree requirements.

  270:232 School Governance, Law, and Intersystems Relations (Fall) 3 Hours
  270:247Organization Management: School and Community
(4 weeks – June)
3 Hours
  270:224* Organizational Studies (6 weeks – May term) 3 Hours
  270:340 School Finance (Spring) 3 Hours
Electives in Special Education and/or related areas (any term) 20 Hours
Total Hours 32 Hours

Other Requirements

  1. Meet the underlying teaching endorsements in at least two levels, Early Childhood Special Education, K-6, 7-12.
  2. Meet the requirements for one of the support area endorsements of School Audiologist, School Psychologist, School Social Worker, or Speech and Language Clinician. (An applicant holding a statement of professional recognition is not eligible for the Director Endorsement.)

*NOTE: You may want to substitute the above course for School Law since law is covered in the 270:232 course. You also may want to substitute 270:284, Facilitating Organizational Growth, for the law course since law will also be covered in that course.
