Visit with Dr Maria MahályováMarch 2000 |
I interviewed Dr. Maria Mahályová to learn about her 30 years of attending to the medical needs of the Roma of Plavecký tvrtok. Her longevity has gained her a reputation as the "Gypsy" or "Roma" doctor. Her colleagues joke with her about having "privatized" the Roma. When my friend Alena called Dr. Mahályová she said she would have 15 minutes for me, but that 15 minutes turned into 2 ˝ hours. It was a fascinating interview and I am currently writing an essay about Maria Mahályová and the Roma of Plavecký tvrtok and hope to find a magazine that will publish it. In the meantime I hope you will find these photos of interest. I would like to thank my friend Zuzana Srankova for her excellent interpretation skills during this interview. Zuzanas eyes, like the good Dr. Mahályovás, smile with kindness and wisdom.
