American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) has selected UNI's College of Education to receive the 1995-96 Distinguished Award in International Education. Seven COE international programs including the Orava Project documented excellence in international education. Award given February 1996.

Orava Project highlighted for success by Ambassador Richard Holbrooke in a speech to the North Atlantic Assembly of NATO, Budapest, Hungary, May, 1995.

Orava Project cited in Senate FY96 and FY97 Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee Report as a successful model educational restructuring program.

The Virginia Reading to Learn Project: Training resource teacher focusing language as a tool for learning. Funded by Department of Education, State of Virginia, approximately $100,000.00 each fiscal year from July 1, 1985 to June 30, 1992. Co-authored the original bill with committee and, as legislative chair of the Virginia State Reading Association, led the legislative effort for enactment of the bill.

INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVES (not including Orava Project)

Co-director of Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking a 3.5 million three year Soros Foundations funded multinational school/university instructional change project. Focus of the project is to infuse into elementary and secondary classrooms a core of instructional methods that promote critical thinking. Project in 1997 involves nine countries (Albania, Czech Republic, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Macedonia, Romania and Russia) with six more to be added in 1998.

Co-planned, directed and delivered Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking Institute. Institute involved 80 participants from 13 countries. This organizational meeting brought together leaders from the nine participating countries and volunteers from universities in the U.S., Canada and Slovakia. Balatonfured, Hungary, June 18-July 3, 1997.

International Exchanges

Co-planned and implemented visits of Slovak educators to U.S. including the following: - Core Teacher Leaders two groups April, 1995 April, 1996

- Semester faculty exchange, Comenius University faculty member Alica Vancova

- Director of Budget for Slovak Ministry of Education and a School Principal visit to Iowa

- Two Slovak students to attend high school and university in U.S.

- The United States Information Agency's International Visitors Program for three Slovak educators for a program developed by Orava Project Co-directors entitled "U.S. Perspectives on Education for Democracy", August 25 - September 12, 1997. Trip involved visits to five states.

CONSULTING EXPERIENCE

Consultant, Geneseo Public School District, Geneseo, IL. Implementing a whole language program with alternative assessment procedures to reflect student learning.

Consultant, Moline Public Schools, Moline, Illinois (1988-present). Direct and deliver a Language Learning Improvement Program for the Moline K-6 teachers and administrators. The first two years of the program entitled, "Improving Student Learning Across the Curriculum," centered around using reading and writing as tools for learning in content areas. More recently, the focus of the program has broadened to include a whole language perspective to language learning. A major component of the program, now entitled Project MILE (Moline Improvement in Literacy Education), include staff development conducted during the past five school years and summers. As a part of the program, a cadre of elementary and middle school master teachers has been developed to serve as a resource to the Moline school district. Staff development includes 15-18 full days of inservice each year and three weeks in summer.

Consultant, The Job Training Partnership Act and the Employment Training Service. Delivered main address, A framework for integrating curriculum: Teaching JTPA adults basic skills. Virginia Beach, VA, April 1991.

Consultant, West Marshall Community Schools. Evaluated K-8 reading/language arts program. Observed in school on three days, interviewed teachers and administrators. Report included evaluation and recommendations, spring 1990.

Consultant, Moline Public Schools. Conducted two days of staff development for Moline teachers for the Writing Program in the district and state 11/10/89, 12/15/89.

Consultant, Moline Public Schools. Worked on developing literacy goals and objectives based on a whole language philosophy. Led site visitations to Des Moines and West Des Moines Public School on March 30 and April 1, 1990.
