Plavecky hrad
(Castle)
The first records of this castle date back to 1296 when it served as the King's castle,
guarding the borders of the country. Later, it was re-built in the gothic and renaissance
style. It ruled over 16 villages, which in the 17th century was even much more territory
than the more well-known castle Devin. The Devin castle is just north of Bratilslav at the
confluence of the Danube and Moravia rivers. Devin ruled over 5 villages. Battles between
Emperor and Hungarian rebels, lead by Rakoczi, in 1706, left the castle in ruins with some
remains of the tower and the rennaisance bastion. In the years 1579-1582 a printing
workshop, of a priester with the wonderful name of Peter Bornemisza, resided here. |
