Prior Knowledge: Learning from What We Already Know
Parents play a key role in their children's learning. Understanding in
real ways how parents can help is something we can teach and modeling is a great way to accomplish this.  A small team of literacy education and Price lab educators worked with Joe Marchesani and his video production team to create a model video for parents on using children's prior knkowledge to learn new information. 40th Annual Beginning Reading Conference

UNI Office of Teacher Education to Host Professional Development Event:
UNI's Office of Teacher Education is hosting a professional development day for all UNI professional education faculty in the teacher education program. The event, "Backmapping to the Future: Listening to the Evidence," will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 29, in the UNI Commons Ballroom. The keynote speaker is Karen Smith, chief operating officer for the National Commissions on Teaching and America's Future. Participants will collaborate with colleagues and identify future initiatives for UNI's Teacher Education program. For more information, contact merrie.schroeder@uni.edu.

UNI to host school administrators for diversity workshop:
Approximately 45 Iowa school administrators will visit the University of Northern Iowa for a diversity workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29 in the Alumni Suite at the McLeod Center. The workshop, "The Changing Face of Iowa Students," coordinated by UNI's Educational Leadership program will discuss challenges and success in schools serving Iowa's increasingly diverse pre-K through12 students. COE Graduate Student receives “20 under 40” Award:
Jenny Connolly, graduate student in post secondary education and student affairs, was recently selected as one of the Waterloo Courier’s 20 Under 40 for 2007. This prestigious award was presented to 20 individuals under the age of 40 that are making a difference in the Cedar Valley. Read more

Jan Bartlett, Assoc Professor appearing on IPTV
Jan Bartlett, Assoc Professor, ELCPE will be appearing on IPTV's The Iowa Journal for a 30-minute program on multi-tasking and the broader societal issues - Program will air this Thursday, Jan. 31 st at 8:30 pm.

Board of Regents Mathmatics and Science Education Initiative:
As part of the Board of Regents Mathematics and Science Education
Collaborative Initiative, UNI hosted a Math Transitions Congress on November 14. An executive summary outline of future plans can be viewed here.

Board of Regents Mathematics and Science Education Inventory:
Members of the Board of Regents Math and Science Education Initiative are conducting an inventory of current outreach and professional development activities related to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). BOR Approves $5.5 Million Request for Math and Science Ed Initiative:
The Board of Regents office directed President Allen and the Math and Science Education Initiative steering committee to coordinate a fiscal year 2009 appropriations request. The steering committee, comprised of faculty from the three Regent universities, created the $5.5 million proposal that addresses student performance in math and science courses, teacher shortages and the need for state collaboration. Early Childhood Student Teachers Attend United Way of Central Iowa Women's Leadership Connection:
Six University of Northern Iowa Early Childhood Students who are student teaching in the DM area this semester and their supervisor attended the United Way of Central Iowa Women's Leadership Connection on 10/16/07. Dr. Andrea McGuire, Chief Medical Officer of American Enterprise Group and Chair of Women's Leadership Connection Advocacy Comm. spoke on Invest in Kids: How the Science of Brain Development Impacts Early Childhood Education.

COE Family Fest Weekend Open House:
Saturday, October 27th, 2007, 11:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M. Schindler Education Center Lobby. Exhibits, displays, refreshments, demonstrations by various student groups, and information about programs offered within the College of Education.

Teacher Education Induction Convocation:
The 34th Teacher Education Induction Convocation will take place at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the GBPAC. Four hundred UNI teacher education students are eligible for induction and have been sent invitations. Stephen Fortgang, Educational Psychology and Foundations, is the Convocation speaker. Faculty and staff are invited to attend to honor the students being inducted.

Presidential Candidate Forum:
The University of Northern Iowa with support from U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley and U.S. Senators Charles Grassley and Tom Harkin is planning to host a series of presidential candidate forums: "Back to School: Addressing the Challenges and Opportunities in American Education."

College of Education Associate Dean Announced:
Dean William Callahan has announced that Dr. Biff Williams has been selected to serve as the Associate Dean of the College of Education.

College of Education Dean Announced:
Interim Provost Jim Lubker has named William P. Callahan dean of the College of Education. This term, effective immediately, will be for three years.

UNI College of Education will host Early Childhood Education Summit,
Friday, April 6, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the UNI Commons. This summit is
