Teaching Endorsement for Middle Level Educators

The Iowa middle level teacher endorsement allows you to teach in grades 5-8 in all areas except: Reading, Special Education, Physical Education, Music, and Industrial Technology!

Undergraduate Students

The requirements for the Iowa Middle Level Teacher endorsement include 3 items:

The successful completion of:

1. UNI Middle Level Education Specialization Courses

Courses:

210:116g Psychology of Adolescence (2 semester hours)

210:135g Middle Level Socialization and Instruction (3 semester hours)

230:116 or 117g Methods of Teaching Literacy (3 semester hours)

210:150g Middle Level Curriculum (3 semester hours)

210:122 Classroom Management: Middle Level (3 semester hours)

2. An elementary or secondary education certification.

3. Content Area Specialization Courses--------Six semester hours in two of each of the following content areas and Twelve semester hours in the other two content areas:

math-to include algebra,
science-to include life and physical science,
social studies-to include world history, American history, and geography, and
language arts-to include speech, composition, and grammar.

If you plan ahead...
you will take most of these courses as part of your Liberal Arts Core requirements!

Depending on the liberal arts courses you have already completed, you may need no additional courses or several additional courses added to your program of study to complete the subject area specialization for the middle level endorsement in Iowa.

How many hours must I take for the endorsement?

It depends on what liberal arts courses you have already taken. Therefore, your best course of action is to immediately contact:

Undergraduate Students! If you are already a student at UNI, contact Cathy Humke in the Registrar's Office (319-273-2245) and ask her to analyze your transcript to determine what courses you need for the middle level education major and endorsement.

If you will be an incoming freshman or undergraduate transfer student, contact Jane Bentley-Gadow in the College of Education Advising Center (319-273-2311). The COE Advising Center can set up an appointment for you to discuss your options.

If you are NOT a UNI student, contact the Iowa State Department of Education, Board of Educational Examiners in Des Moines, Iowa for information about the Middle School Teacher Endorsement.

They will help assist you in determining what courses you need to take.

This is a great chance to be endorsed as a highly qualified teacher in the middle grades!

Be sure your revised program of study is filed with Cathy Humke in the UNI Registrar's Office.

Intent to pursue the middle level endorsement must be recorded specifically for each student !!
