New IRTS Resources

Classroom Critters and the Scientific Method.
Do goldfish hide?  Are kittens left-handed or right-handed?  These and many other questions will be explored when students use the 37 behavioral experiments found in this innovative resource.  Focusing on animal-friendly procedures, and using commonly found classroom pets, each experiment explores the five steps of the scientific method: Question, Hypothesis, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.  Sally Kneidel.  Fulcrum Publishing, 1999.

Guidelines for Physical Education Programs: Grades K-12 Standards, Objectives, and Assessments.
This resource is for individuals teaching or developing the curriculum for physical education method courses, or anyone looking for innovative ways of assessing objectives in physical education.  It was developed by the Task Force to Development Standards for Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.  Specific examples of assessments appropriate for the stated objectives and standards are provided. Steveda F. Chepko and Ree K. Arnold.  Allyn and Bacon, 2000.

Educating the Heart: Lessons to Build Respect and Responsibility.
Specifically designed to help teachers build students’ respect for themselves and others, this resource is a tool for promoting personal and social responsibility.  It presents over 90 carefully chosen activities in a developmental sequence, progressing from valuing one’s own identity to appreciating and participating in the world at large.  Children can learn to celebrate their own culture and individuality, value others, and work cooperatively.  Frank Siccone, Lilia Lulu Lopez, and Lulu Lopez.  Allyn and Bacon, 2000.

Lesson Planning: Long-Range and Short-Range Models for Grades K-6.
In this book, the author shows teachers exactly how to plan lessons and specifies what is expected of the student or preservice teachers from their first day on the job.  Many helpful tips for good planning, including clear guidelines for long-range, short-range, and daily plans as well as step by step guidance on how to write them.  This resource book is designed to be read, written in, planned in, and consulted on a regular basis.  Linda Karges-Bone.  Allyn & Bacon, 2000.

 Elections.
This thematic unit contains ideas and materials that will help teachers at the primary level to instruct students about the concepts of selecting our leaders and changing laws.  It connects students to the areas of language arts, social studies, math and art with individual and group activities.  The culminating activity is a simulated election.    Stephanie Buehler, et. al.  Teacher Created Materials, 2000.

 Native Americans.
This Native American unit presents a variety of lesson ideas designed for primary children.  At the core of the unit are three stories; Arrow to the Sun, Rainbow Crow, and The Legend of the Bluebonnet.  Activities are selected which set the stage for reading, encourage the enjoyment of the book and extending the concepts gained.  In addition, the theme is connected to the curriculum through language arts, math science, social studies, art, music, and life skills.  Cooperative learning is encouraged in many of the activities.  Leigh Severson.  Teacher Created Materials, 2000.
