Group Benefits Design Corp. Sponsors Health Promotion Planning Contest At the University of Northern Iowa

Each semester, students in the Health Promotion Program Planning course (410:176) select a different health problem to be the focus of their planning efforts. In recent semesters students have addressed, West Nile Virus, colo-rectal cancer, influenza, whooping cough, and prostate cancer. Last semester, students were invited to prepare plans to prevent musculoskeletal and back injuries among employees at Bertch Cabinet Manufacturing, Inc.

Group Benefits Design Corp. an Iowa employee benefits consulting firm, provided UNI students an additional incentive in the form of cash awards for the best plans. Using aggregate cost and injury data, students prepared program plans that verified the severity of the back-injury problem, identified target behaviors and environmental circumstances that contributed to back injuries, and proposed programs to reduce the injuries. Student plans were reviewed by a panel of judges including John Monaghan, President of Group Benefits Design Corp., Maria Johnson Drees, Health and Wellness Consultant for Group Benefits Design Corp., (and UNI graduate), and Mitzi Tann, Human Resources Director for Bertch Cabinet Manufacturing, Inc.
