University of Northern Iowa
School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services
Elinor A Crawford & William R. Thrall
Hall of Excellence
Tracing its historical roots to 1896 with establishment of the Department of Physical Culture, the University of Northern Iowa's School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services is one of the oldest programs in the United States. Course work in physical education dates back to 1878, two years after the opening of what was then known as Iowa State Normal School.
In 1978, the School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services was established, combining men and women's health, physical education and recreation programs. At the time of the merger, Dr. Elinor Crawford was the head of the Department of Women's Physical Education and Dr. William R. Thrall served as the head of the Department of Men's Physical Education. Through their generosity, the School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services Hall of Excellence was developed to recognize former graduates who had distinguished themselves professionally.
Located in the main lobby of the Wellness/Recreation Center, the Hall of Excellence provides recognition of distinguished graduates and captures the history of the program. Although the School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services is proud of all its graduates, the Hall of Excellence was created to acknowledge its meritorious graduates and to encourage currently enrolled students to strive toward this recognition.

Sylvia Boltz Tucker Hall of Excellence Reflection Speech 12/17/09
Seventy years ago this last fall a barely seventeen year old girl from the northeastern corner of the state of Iowa walked into a large room in the Women's Gymnasium. Something was happening; she wasn't just sure what. It was the motor abilities test given to students. She loved running and climbing and jumping and throwing and whatever. She ran the fields, the hills, along the Mississippi River of her little river town. She climbed the trees and jumped the streams. As she looked at the maze of stuff in the test, she thought it looked like fun. So she ran the course. At the end of her run, several faculty members came up and excitedly asked, " Are you a major?" She really had no idea what they were asking. "Are you a Physical Education Major?" "No, I'm taking business ." "You have to be a major. You just scored the highest score we've had since we started giving this test .".... learn more
