2007-2008 GA Position Description

The Financial Aid Office is part of the division of Educational and Student Services. The Financial Aid Office is responsible for assisting students and their parents in obtaining financial aid funds to help with paying the educational cost incurred each academic year. The office consists of technical awarding procedures regulated by the U.S. Department of Education, as well as in-house and outreach counseling intended to educate students and parents of the financial aid process.

The Financial Aid Office works closely with the UNI Admission's Office in the recruitment of students and with the UNI Controller's Office in the disbursement of financial aid monies.

Office hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm during the fall and spring semesters and summer 7:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Description
This is an academic year assistantship, and work assignment will not exceed 20 hours per week assisting designated staff in certain appropriate functions, including research.

The graduate assistant must be a full-time degree-seeking student in a graduate program (student affairs, counseling, or related field is preferred), and should exhibit proficiency in written and oral communication, management and organizational skills, and have a sincere desire to pursue Financial Aid Administration as a career.

All graduate assistants will obtain experience in technical and administrative areas pertaining to the awarding for financial aid funds, such as knowledge of the various financial aid programs and awarding philosophy, policies and procedures, office personnel training, NCAA and athletic grant regulations, scholarships, student employment, computer programming, and record transmission. Furthermore, the student will participate in financial aid counseling sessions with professionals, peer counselors, and student advisors. These experiences will contribute to the student's graduate education. Graduate Assistants will be expected to research all areas of resources to enable themselves to complete activities and assignments.

Requirements and Expectations
First Year
First Semester:
1. Interview each of the professional staff to get an understanding of the tasks they are responsible for.
2. Attend weekly staff meetings, office processing meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
3. Explore resources such as the federal aid application, all office brochures, journal articles, and federal handbook chapters.
4. Participate in outreach activities as assigned.
5. Work as a student advisor.
6. Meet with the Assistant Director of Outreach to have an open discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of the first semester experience.

Second Semester:
1. Train and work in the editing and awarding area.
2. Train and work as a peer counselor.
3. Attend meetings as assigned.
4. Participate in outreach activities as assigned.
5. Explore additional resources of financial aid information.
6. Meet with the Assistant Director of Outreach to have an open discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of the second semester experience.

Second Year

1. Continue to work as a peer counselor or designated area.
2. Select a project area to focu on.
3. Submit project plan of action, including time-line for project approval.
4. Attend all office meetings as assigned.
5. Research current information as relates to project.
6. Implement project.
7. Prepare a portfolio or paper of the finished project.
8. Meet with a Assistant Director of Outreach to have an open discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of each semester's experiences.
