"My time at the University of Northern Iowa was not only a great period in my life with friends, family and community, it prepared me for a lifetime's work. Today, as the Superintendent of the nation's 22nd largest school system, not a day goes by where I don't draw on my UNI experience. The solid foundation in teaching and learning of my undergraduate program and my master's program in Ed. Leadership at UNI have served me well. From the deep understanding of how young people learn to issues of policy, governance and school finance, I have been well prepared."

"I keep returning to UNI to further my education and learn more. It is all about quality and students first - isn't that what education is all about? The University of Northern Iowa provides excellent training for future leaders to further everyone's life long learning."

"The program is about quality and the relationships that graduate students build with the instructors at the University. The Ed Leadership program at UNI uses current research and practicing administrators in the field to expand the learning of Ed Leadership students. Working together to strengthen America's Education system is the goal."

"Many years ago, when I first enrolled in the UNI doctoral program I was the superintendent of Starmont Schools in Iowa. I was resolute in my desire to earn a doctorate degree; but finding a program that provided a glimmer of hope of completing was not an easy task. When I spoke to the folks at UNI I was almost immediately convinced that it was the right spot for me. A degree from UNI was attainable and would have the stature necessary for me to do what I wanted with my career. Along the way, I ran into some health problems which caused my dissertation timeline to be extended; the people at UNI hung with me the entire time. The work that I did at UNI has served me well during my entire career as a school superintendent. I am proud to be an alumnus; UNI opened many doors for me that, otherwise, would not have been."

Richard N. Johns, Ed.D.
