Dr. Tim Gilson attended the 14th Joint National Conference on Alternatives to Expulsion, Suspension, & Dropping Out of School in Orlando in January. The conference, sponsored by the National Alternative Education Association, and the Coalition for Safe & Effective Schools focused on a number of Dr. Gilson’s research areas, including alternative education, dropout prevention, reaching marginalized students, and student motivation.
Drs. Victoria Robinson and Nick Pace delivered a presentation entitled “Best Practice in Principal Development” at the University Council of Educational Administration Conference in Washington, DC in November. The conference brought professors of Educational Leadership from across the country together to discuss the future of educational leadership and preparation of school leaders.
Dr. Dave Else facilitated planning and delivery of the working conference Community Will and Education: How Do We Enhance the Will of the Community in Northwest Ohio to Provide its Citizens With Quality Education? The conference featured Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary as the key note speaker. Yarrow, a long time advocate of peace and tolerance founded Operation Respect, an advocacy organization that offer a free school-based educational program called Don't Laugh at Me (http://www.dontlaugh.org/) which encourages students and staff to work together to create a caring, compassionate and respectful school environment. Dr. Else has written a piece for the proceedings entitled, The Working Conference Format: A Model for Collaborative Dialogue and Planning.
Dr. Nick Pace published I’ve Completely Changed: The Transforming Impact of the Matthew Shepard Scholarship in Spring 2007 issue of The Journal of Advanced Academics, 18(3).
Dr. Lew Finch served as an American Association of School Administrators
representative on the National Policy Board for Educational Administration
Steering Committee charged with revision of the ISSLC Standards, which ISSL closely mirrors. The committee recommended a number of revisions, which were approved in December.
Dr. Nick Pace has been awarded the University Book and Supply Outstanding Teaching Award in the College of Education. The award annually recognizes the a non-tenured faculty member for significant contributions to the quality of teaching in the College of Education. Dr. Pace joins Drs. Else and Robinson, who received the College of Education award for Outstanding Service in 1994 and 2005, respectively.
Dr. Victoria Robinson serves on the Steering Committee for the Iowa Leadership Academy, which is organized through a joint effort among School Administrators of Iowa, Department of Education, Area Education Agencies, Institutions of Higher Learning, Local Education Agencies and Iowa Association of School Boards with generous support of the Wallace Foundation.
The 2008 Iowa Leadership Principals Center Summer Institute will be held June 23-June 25 at the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, and is offered to Iowa practicing principals and assistant principals. Dr. David Else facilitated the FINE Foundation Working Conference on Smoothing the Transition from High School to Successful Postsecondary Education Experiences. The conference was held in Des Moines in October and brought together educators from different levels across the state. Dr. Tim Gilson attended with Dr. Else and contributed an issue paper for the recently published monograph. This addressed helping students to obtain career guidance and expectations throughout their high school experience.
Drs. Nicholas Pace and Victoria Robinson were named Carver Graduate Fellows. The Fellowship, entitled Immigrant and Refugee Populations: Promoting Wellbeing and Integration in the New Iowa, examined issues surrounding Rapid Ethnic Diversification in Iowa and its implications for the Iowa and education.
Dr. Victoria Robinson attended the Iowa Leadership Academy in Dubuque in June.
Dr. Robert Decker spent a good portion of the summer term in Burlington with a new principalship cohort made up of aspiring school leaders from Southeast Iowa.
Drs. Robert Decker and Victoria Robinson attended the Iowa Evaluator Approval II training meeting in Des Moines on June 28-29. The training focused on new evaluation procedures for school administrators in Iowa.
Dr. Tim Gilson was recently published in the Journal of Educational Research and Policy Studies. Gilson’s work was entitled “Alternative High Schools: What factors lead to the greatest level of effectiveness?”
