Minorities in the Leadership of Education

Creating a pathway of opportunity to the
Principalship • Superintendency • Doctorate

MILE Program Highlights:

  • Providing financial assistance for qualified aspiring school leaders of color
  • Educational Leadership program aligned with the Iowa Standards for School Leaders
  • Program of study leading to Iowa certification in the Principalship and/or Superintendency
  • Opening doors of opportunity to earning the Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.)

MILES Ahead…

Since 1876, UNI has been a distinguished leader in the development of educators and educational leaders. That legacy continues today with an Educational Leadership program that meets the changing needs of Iowa’s schools head on. Across the state, schools are searching for ways to address the challenges and opportunities of growing diversity, the achievement gap, and an ongoing need for greater cultural competency. They’re looking for school leaders of color to lead the way. And UNI is responding.

GOING the EXTRA MILE…

Many aspiring principals and superintendents of color enrolled in the MILE program seek to earn their Doctor of Education (Ed.D.). The MILE program helps blaze that trail by building a Network of Practice and Support and providing financial assistance. Some students may be able to combine their principalship and superintendency studies toward the doctorate.

I have just recently completed the first semester of the MILE program and let me just say, I have never been in classes that were so relevant and so applicable to my profession. The professors were very experienced and knowledgeable of what it takes to be a successful leader in an urban setting. The activities, assignments, and other coursework lends itself extremely well to practical application in a school setting. It has definitely solidified my aspiration to become a principal in an urban setting. I look forward to work on my doctorate and becoming a principal. This once insurmountable task has, without a doubt, become attainable with the financial help and support from the MILE program.

I feel very honored and privileged to have been selected as a participant in the MILE program. What an awesome opportunity this scholarship has provided me to achieve my educational goals. Without it I believe it would have been very difficult for me to enroll in school. For some time I have contemplated returning to school to further my education. On question always came up when thinking of returning to school, “Can I afford the additional educational expense”? This scholarship not only provided financial assistance, but opened the door for me to further my education. I am eternally grateful for the scholarship and the opportunity to achieve my educational goals.
