UNI Student Council for Exceptional Children

Welcome to the UNI Student Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children. We hope you will join today and get involved!

Watch out for UNI's Student Council for Exceptional Children Organization! This semester we have been given the opportunity through funding to conduct the Inclusive Book Backpack Project! What is this you say? We are trying to increase the awareness of the diverse needs of children in schools by providing information in school and community settings. We received funding from the Cedar Falls Kiwanis last spring to buy library book sets  which are age based (K-5) or middle school ages (6-8) so that appropriate literature materials could be provided for in-classroom use. Each one of these sets would contain books that classroom teachers could use to supplement their teaching or use as a whole to bring disability awareness to their students. UNI SCEC members are currently working with the schools now to see what books and themes are most useful at the schools. UNI SCEC will also provide examples of lessons and activities that teachers could use in the classroom to utilize the materials in building understanding and appreciation of all students. As appropriate, SCEC members will also be available to discuss or facilitate conversations on differing abilities or disabilities within classrooms and provide follow-up. We will be working throughout this semester on this project and welcome anyone interested in participating with us.  5 different teams will be working in October and November and delivering materials to schools in early December. We welcome anyone interested in participating with us.

We are excited to begin this project and work with the different schools, faculty, and students! Wish us luck on journey!
