Marie Mock, Early Childhood Special Education
Why did you choose UNI's Teacher Education program? I finished my undergraduate teaching degree in Early Childhood Education at UNI and really enjoyed the experience. When I was making the decision to come back to school for my master’s degree the first place I thought of was UNI. My professors and teachers were all very knowledgeable, helpful, and experienced. They supported my learning and when I went out in the field to teach after graduation and student teaching I felt very prepared.
What current/prior experiences do you have with special education? One of my minors is in Early Childhood Special Education, through those courses I got a lot of hands-on practicum experience teaching and supporting many different children with special needs. The field experiences that the Department of Special Education provides are excellent learning opportunities. I am currently working on my master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education and am excited to support children with special needs in the classrooms I will work with in the future.
What is a fond memory of your time spent at UNI? I love to work with children. Any time that I had field experiences where I was working with and teaching kids were my favorite, and there were a lot of them!
Any tips for prospective/current students that are working toward similar degrees? Getting my minor in Early Childhood Special Education was one of the best choices I made at UNI. The classes and practicums were excellent learning and teaching experiences for me. I left the program prepared and excited to teach young children of all abilities.
What are your career plans? Where would you like your UNI education to take you? I love to teach preschool aged children. I plan to find an early childhood placement program where I can support all children, including children with special needs into the same classroom and learning environment.
