Minor Emphasis: Instructional Strategist I Mild/Moderate (5-12)

Why did you choose UNI's Teacher Education program?  Many administrators and teachers I have worked with advised me to look into coming to UNI because Northern Iowa students seemed the best prepared for teaching right after graduation.  My dad is actually a superintendent and he feels that graduates from UNI are always a leg up.  UNI applications or resumes get shuffled to the top of pile.  I also worked at a junior high where the principal gave instructions when interviewing and from his experience, UNI students were always the best prepared.  All of these resources and personal contacts advised me to attend UNI before I ever asked about their opinion of this institution.  I am so thankful that I listened to their advice, UNI has been a great fit for me so far.

What current/prior experiences do you have with special education?  I have had the opportunity to work at Indian Hills Middle School within an enclosed class with special needs students.  These students were transitioned for inclusion into a general education setting.  My job title was a teacher's aide and I had the opportunity to work one-on-one with a student with an IEP.  I was able to see him in a variety of areas and had great experiences learning with him.  I currently work at Comp Systems and help consumers do day-to-day living and I help them with school programs.

What is a fond memory of your time spent at UNI?  A fond memory for me was my experience in Phase I at Cunningham Elementary School in Waterloo.  It was a great school to witness theory put into practice.  I was able to witness co-teaching, separate gender classrooms, and a school-wide behavioral intervention system.  The experience I had in this school is unique and was wonderful to experience.  My experiences working with the professors and staff on campus during this time were extremely beneficial.  I would highly recommend seeking guidance from the Phase I professors and staff, Dr. Curran, Dr. Etscheidt and Candace Sawyer. They are all great resources and wonderful people to get to know on campus.

Any tips for prospective/current students that are working toward similar degrees?   I would recommend taking advantage of the resource of the Price Lab School.  There aren't many schools that have this same type of resource right on campus.  Price Lab is such a wonderful location and atmosphere to experience.  This school was designed specifically to help educate future teachers and was made for UNI students to gain important skills and experience.  As I walked through the halls I was able to see the integration of all the different opportunities for every grade level.  The interactions between students and staff and the teaching strategies were extremely beneficial for me to witness and I would recommend all students seeking out this same opportunity.

What are your career plans? Where would you like your UNI education to take you?  I would like to go back to the Des Moines area in order to be closer to home, family, and friends.  I would love to work in Ankeny because they have a solid network and a great special education program.  With the experience that I have gained, I would like to be able to apply the teaching strategies that I am currently learning in a classroom environment.
