Instructional Strategist II: Mental Disabilities (K-12)
Students who hold or will be holding an Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary, or Special Education teaching certificate may receive the K-12 Instructional Strategist II: Mental Disabilities Endorsement by satisfactorily completing the following program from the University of Northern Iowa.
SPED 3150 Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners in Classrooms, 2 Hours (Fall/Spring/Summer)
SPED 4167 Current Issues in the Education of Students with Severe Disabilities, 2 Hours (Fall)
SPED 4184 Professional Interdisciplinary Relationships in Special Education I, 3 Hours (Fall/Spring)
SPED 4187 Teaching Preschool and Elementary Students with Severe Disabilities, 3 Hours (Spring) (ICN)
SPED 4192 Experience in Special Education (elementary placement), 3 Hours (Spring)
SPED 4183 Teaching Secondary-Level Students with Severe Disabilities, 3 Hours (Fall) (ICN)
SPED 4192 Experience in Special Education (secondary placement), 3 Hours (Fall)
SPED 4153 Introduction to Assistive Technology for Instruction, 3 Hours (Spring)
CSD 4100 Augmentative Communication, 2 Hours (Fall)

*Post Baccalaureate students holding a teaching certificate may fulfill the student teaching requirement through completion of a university supervised SPED 6290 Experience in Special Education (Severe Disabilities; 3 hours) in an approved setting.
Students taking courses for graduate credit should register for the above courses but with a “5” prefix (e.g., SPED 5167, SPED 5187, etc.)
Course Descriptions
SPED 3150 Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners in Classrooms (2 hours)
Introduction to pedagogical, curricular, and social considerations involved in educating diverse learners in the general education classroom.
SPED 4167 Current Issues in the Education of Students with Severe Disabilities (2 hours)
Current and historical educational trends, etiology, and impact of the disability on the child and family.
SPED 4184 Professional Interdisciplinary Relationships in Special Education I (3 hours)
Development of professional behaviors characterized by positive personal interaction with others and effective team skills. Strategies for collaborating with parents, regular and special educators, paraprofessionals, and other individuals in the educational program.
SPED 4187 Teaching Preschool and Elementary School Students with Severe Disabilities (3 hours)
Instructional methods, materials, and assessment for students with severe disabilities. Emphasis on general education and functional age-appropriate, longitudinal curriculum development. Includes teaching students with severe/profound mental disabilities, who may have accompanying physical, behavioral, sensory, or multiple disabilities.
SPED 4192 Experience in Special Education (3 hours)
Supervised assessment and teaching experience in special education as listed in the schedule of classes.
SPED 4183 Teaching Secondary-Level Students with Severe Disabilities (3 hours)
Instructional methods, materials, and assessment for secondary-level students with severe disabilities; focusing on strategies to support students within the inclusive classroom.
SPED 4153 Introduction to Assistive Technology for Instruction (3 hours)
Modification of physical structures, equipment, materials, and procedures for disabled students with accompanying physical, sensory, and/or multiple impairments.
CSD 4100 Augmentative Communication (2 hours)
Study of theoretical and practical aspects of planning augmentative communication for the severely communicatively disabled.
SPED 4142 Classroom Instructional Management for Students with Disabilities (K-8) (3 hours)
Designed to develop the instructional and behavioral management competencies required to teach K-6 students with disabilities.
SPED 4143 Classroom Instructional Management for Students with Disabilities (5-12) (3 hours)
Designed to develop the instructional and behavioral management competencies required to teach students in grades 7-12 with disabilities.
