Mission Statement & Goals

Department of Special Education

 

The Department of Special Education provides education, advocacy, and leadership at the local, state, and national level.  Through its scholarship, service, and teaching development and dissemination of innovative instructional practices for pre-service and practicing educators, the Department of Special Education supports students and families both with and without disabilities as well as those from minority and culturally diverse backgrounds.

 

Education

Goal 1: To be a leader in preparing qualified personnel to fill a range of teaching and human service positions.

Objective 1:1:  Collaborate and coordinate with other education stakeholders in the delivery of integrated, interdisciplinary, and innovative teacher preparation and professional development opportunities supporting diverse, inclusive, individualized, and responsive learning environments for PK-21 students with exceptional learning needs and their families.

Objective 1.2:  Provide transformative learning experiences to encourage program graduates to enter the profession with a commitment to developing high-quality, inclusive school environments.

Objective 1.3:  Provide early and intensive field-based learning experiences to promote an understanding and application of effective home and school-based practices.

Advocacy

Goal 2:  To be an advocate for policies and practices that increase the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and their families.

Objective 2.1:  Continue to constitute the Special Education Advisory Board and expand reciprocal participation for more effective information sharing.

Objective 2.2:  Enhance the teacher preparation program to prepare educational leaders to serve in advocacy roles.

Leadership

Goal 3:  To be a leader in contributing to the knowledge base in special education.

Objective 3.1:  Address the need for highly qualified, responsive, and ethical education professionals able to fill a wide range of teaching and human service needs as educators, leaders, and advocates for diverse and exceptional learners throughout their educational careers.

Objective 3.2:  Engage in creative, intellectually rigorous and relevant research, scholarship, and service that contributes to the practical and theoretical knowledge base of the field at the local, state, national, and global level.
