What is Health Promotion?

Health has been listed as a high needs area in Iowa, as recently as fall 2011, and many jobs in Iowa are asking for a health education minor in addition to a physical education major. The UNI Health Promotion program's curriculum is specifically tailored to sit for the Certified Health Educator Specialist exam.

There is a national shortage of health care workers, community health and environmental health educators.  Within Iowa, more than 70% of the counties have regions that are declared health provider shortage areas.  The Health Promotion and Education major is crticial to meeting this need, as UNI has the highest rate of state university graduates that stay in Iowa, following graduation, to work.

The Division of Health Promotion and Education is widely recognized for its extensive community engagement work, and has professional collaborative relationships with hundreds of leading health agencies locally, nationally and globally.

The Division serves almost 215 students, including 105 majors, 80 minors and 30 graduates.

The UNI Division of Health Promotion and Education was designated on campus as a revenue "generating center", duirng the recent academic prioritization review process.  Over the past 15 years alone, the division has been awarded more than $8,000,000 in highly competitive grants and external funding from the National Institutes of Health, the CDC, Wellmark Foundation, Ford Foundation, the State of Iowa, etc.

Health educators work to encourage healthy lifestyles and wellness through educating individuals and communities about behaviors that promote healthy living and prevent diseases and other health problems.

Public health education promotes the health of the general public using a wide variety of settings.  This major helps students acquire the skills and abilities to develop, implement and evaluate health education programs.

Our curriculum is tailored to met national competencies for health educators.  A degree in health promotion prepares students to sit for the National Certified Health Education Specialist exam (CHES).
