The Urban Education Network (UEN) Principalship Cohort

The Urban Education Network (UEN) program serves aspiring school leaders primarily in Iowa's urban school districts and includes the following features:

  • An engaging, real-world curriculum aligned with  the Iowa Standards for School Leaders (ISSL) and UNI Educational Leadership's Core Values of Leadership of Learning, Service and Change with a special focus on the unique needs and opportunities found in Iowa's urban schools;

 

  • Authentic course-embedded learning opportunities that connect theory with actual practice facilitated by a dynamic, and award-winning faculty with decades of combined school leadership experience;

 

  • Courses in our programs are offered via interactive video conferencing methods and online, as well as a dynamic, nine day face-to-face  on campus session during the first summer of enrollment; 

 

  • Formation of a dynamic and collegial learning cohort made up of professional educators from across the state, with new groups beginning each fall semester;

 

  • Authentic learning and leadership experiences that address current educational challenges and opportunities related to legislation, increasing diversity and technology, financial pressures, and societal changes;

 

  • A personalized field-based internship experience that allows students to experience school leadership in their schools and communities, with extensive support from campus-based professors, experienced field supervisors, and local mentors;

 

  • The opportunity to choose between two areas of emphasis: Activities Administration or Community Connections;

 

  • Development and presentation of a personalized school leadership portfolio that highlights student's experiences as an aspiring school leader;

 

  • Students pursuing a master's degree complete a 37 unit program, while those already possessing a master's have the option of earning a second master's or an Advanced Studies Certificate (ASC), which addresses Iowa licensure requirements.
