Superintendency Program

Across the state, region, and nation, educational leaders who have emerged from the UNI Superintendency program are making a difference for students.  Our bold and innovative program encompasses a field-based approach that emphasizes skill development in a district setting, coupled with expert instruction in a cohort of learning community.

Course experiences and requirements are bassed on ISSL and are embedded throughout coursework and internship experiences.  With the support of professors, lead mentors, and mentors special expertise, candidates create an individualized internship plan that combines district needs, as well as their own skills, interests, and desires.  Work products, experiences, and reflections provide evidence of candidates' complete understanding of ISSL and the complex roles and responsibilities of the 21st century superintendent.

Aligned, Respected, and Connected...

  • UNI superintendency program requirements are based on ISSL and are integrated with the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) Professional Standards of the superintendency.  Twenty-four units of coursework connect theory to practice through nine units of field-based internship.

Immersed in a Network of Practice...

  • Candidates participate in on-campus seminar experiences during the program (selected weekends). This brings them into a professional relationship with critical friends who are Iowa's leading superintendents, building relationships that grow and evolve over the course of the program.

Partnerships link Nowhere Else...

  • Only at UNI do candidates benefit from our unique partnerships with McREL and District Leadership That Works, the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) Lighthouse Project, Iowa Superintendents Finance and Leadership Consortium (ISFLC), the UNI Executive Development Center, and the Iowas Center for Immigration Leadership and Integration.  These key partnerships provide candidates with unique experiences that build a framework of leadership second to none.

The World, at Your Site...

  • The UNI program utilizes courses that come to you via interactive video conferencing methods (including the Iowa Communications Network [ICN]) and online using eLearning, a Blackboard learning management system requiring Internet access and a web browser, as well as face-to-face interaction.  Access to a high-speed Internet connection and a webcam/microphone (common in newer computers) may also be required.  While most students encounter very few technical difficulties, our team of support specialists is available to assist you as needed.  For your convenience, you will have electronic access to the UNI Rod Library.  Learning experiences take shape through performance-based activities, problem-solving, and collaborative projects.

Ongoing Support and Guidance...

  • University professors regularly observe and interact with candidates and their mentors around authentic internship experiences that take place in districts across Iowa.
