Reading Endorsement Requirements

ENDORSEMENT REQUIREMENTS – GRADUATE STUDIES |
There are four different types of endorsements that can be obtained at the graduate level. : Reading K-8, Reading 5-12, English/Language Arts K-8, and Reading Specialist K-12. The requirements for each of these endorsements is provided below.
Reading K-8
From the Elementary Teaching Degree:
· LITED 1044 Children’s Literature (3 hrs)
· LITED 3115 Methods of Teaching Early Literacy (3 hrs)
· LITED 3116 Methods of Teaching Literacy in the Intermediate Grades (3 hrs)
· TEACHING 3134 Elementary Teaching (4-12 hrs)
From the Literacy Education MAE Program of Study:
· LITED 6238 Advanced Assessment & Evaluation of Literacy Development (3 hrs)
· LITED 6240 Language Development & Variability (3 hrs)
· LITED 6245 Ideological, Cultural, and Sociopolitical Issues in Children’s Literature (3 hrs)
From Other Sources:
· LITED 6247 Remedial Reading (3 hrs)
· LITED 6292 Experience in Reading: Tutoring (3 hrs)
Reading 5-12
From Middle Level/Secondary Teaching Degree:
· LITED 4117/5117 Methods of Teaching Content Literacy at the Middle and Secondary Levels (3 hrs)
· TEACHING 3137 Middle School/Junior High Teaching OR TEACHING 3138 Secondary School Teaching
From the Literacy Education MAE Program of Study
· LITED 6238 Advanced Assessment & Evaluation of Literacy Development (3 hrs)
· LITED 6240 Language Development & Variability (3 hrs)
· LITED 6245 Ideological, Cultural, and Sociopolitical Issues in Children’s Literature (3 hrs)
· LITED 6212 Methods and Materials in Literacy Education (3 hrs) [for individuals whose teaching degree did not include methods of teaching literacy course]
From Other Sources:

Requires:
1. Master’s degree
2. Standard license and a teaching endorsement
3. At least one year of experience which included the teaching of reading as a significant part of the responsibility.
