America Reads

America Reads of UNI, a work study program, provides after school tutoring for local schools in the community. In the 2016-2017 school year, America Reads is partnered with Lincoln Elementary School in Cedar Falls to offer an afterschool program called Paw Pride.

The Panthers of UNI and the Tigers of Lincoln Elementary get together twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to engage in literacy activities.

Each America Reads session runs for 60 minutes with Panther tutors working one to one or in small groups with students in grades 2 through 6. During the first 30 minutes, tutors provide assistance with homework. The remainder of their time together is spent enhancing literacy skills through a book club.

Some examples of the activities provided during book club include reader's theatre, interactive read alouds, and crafts activities related to books the children and tutors are reading together.

This is a conference room in the renovated Schindler Education Center. It is located on the first floor across from the Special Education office.  Plan to come with your laptop or device, and ideas from your lesson plans that you can share. Each America Reads tutor will have her/his own book club group this spring!

This lesson plan frame is used by the America Reads tutors in developing lessons which incorporate children's literature in the lesson activities.
