Howard Gardner. (2011). The Unschooled Mind: How Children Think and How Schools Should Teach (2nd ed.). Basic Books.
We usually think of Howard Gardner as “the Multiple Intelligences” guy in education. In The Unschooled Mind, Gardner asks us to consider how we come to deep understandings in learning. He proposes not surface “mastery” but how apprenticeship models and “Christopherian conflicts” in understanding change our thinking. (Christopherian conflicts are explained as the upheaval in thinking when Christopher Columbus did NOT sail off the edge of the world). Recommended reading to get your head out of the end-of-the year doldrums whether you are a student, scholar, or educator.
