We are also sorry to announce the death of ALA Associate Executive Director Gerald Hodges on January 10, 2006. Dr. Hodges was on the SLMS faculty from 1975-1979.

  • Cheryl Robson and Ames Middle School for receiving two awards from the Best Buy Teach Program, one for $2,500 and one for $15,000 for schools using interactive technology.

  • Michelle Cowell, Teacher Librarian at Waverly Shellrock, was interviewed for a national news article about student use of Wikipedia, that appeared in a Gannett News Service Report.

  • Teacher Librarians Terri Toppler (Davenport), Wendy Ziegler (Cedar Rapids), and Rosemary Zummach (Oelwein). They have received National Board Certification!!

  • Some of you will remember Megan Taylor She took some classes from us before going on to UW Madison for her MA. Meg has been appointed to the Caldecott committee!! She is the head of youth services at the public library in Fayetville, NC
  • School Librarians - you can finally jump for joy! The House just amended an Educational Bill (HF 2792) to reinstate the school librarian requirement into Code! It then passed unanimously. Beginning July 1, 2006, each school district shall have a qualified teacher librarian who shall be licensed by the board of educational examiners under chapter 272.
  • From Lori Minnard in Michigan: My principal was just commending me for my performance on the job and futuristic school library philosophy. ... This is such a wonderful school and position. I just love it. Plus, the principal is supportive, she thinks the library and what happens there is the core of the entire school. When they remodeled the school, she proposed a plan that had the library in the center of the building and accessible from the main doors, all enclosed in glass walls with classrooms surrounding and above it looking into the library. She is all for collaboration, and research....
  • Misty Gray, UNI school library media studies graduate student, is the recipient of this year's CROW (Current Research on Women) award. Misty's master's paper, "Fiction containing gay and lesbian characters in Northeast Iowa secondary schools" was presented April 3rd in Maucker Union.
  • Donna Gwinnup says "God I love this job!" while she's checking out, checking in, shelving, running a book fair, organizing events to go along with the book fair, answering the phone, helping kids find books - all at the same time!

  • The Hiawatha Public Library is seeking a full-time Youth Services Librarian. This is a position with benefits including health and dental insurance, sick leave, personal leave, and vacation. Reports to the Library Director and the Assistant Library Director. Responsibilities include managing public services for youth such as children's programming and story times, Teen Board, outreach to schools and daycares, collection development, and bibliographies. Knowledge of current principles and practices of library science as well as knowledge of children's books, authors, and book classification.
    Training and Experience: Four-year undergraduate degree required. Reccomended one year public library experience. Some administrative skills required. Compiter knowledge and skills required.

  • The Fairfield Public Library has an opening for a full-time Youth Services Librarian. Starting salary is $25,000. An MLS is preferred, but candidates with youth services experience and an educational degree are also encouraged to apply.   • I am leaving the position at Sigourney after 7 wonderful years as my family is moving on to Newton.
