Kids With Books

Two Types of Practicum Experiences:

  1. There are two types of practicum experiences. If you are enrolled as a full time student and/or are not working full time, you will do a regular practicum. This involves 30 hours of time in a library/libraries per hour of credit. It also requires the completion of one special project for the cooperating librarian(s) and a journal.

  2. If you are working full-time (i.e. as a teacher, librarian, library aide, etc.) and, thus, cannot complete the first type of practicum experience, you may be eligible for a mentoring practicum. This requires the completion of a discussion list between you and your cooperating librarian(s). The discussions may be held by phone, email, over Saturday morning breakfast, etc. In addition, you will need to spend at least two days in the cooperating librarian's library(ies). There is also a journal requirement.

Arrangements & Evaluations:

The arrangements for working in schools will be made by Mrs. Krueger. If you are doing a regular practicum, at least one visit to your school will be made by the Instructor. Email discussions between the cooperating librarian and Mrs. Krueger may also take place. Please feel free to email Dr. Krueger any time during your practicum if you have questions or concerns. Cooperating librarians will be sent an evaluation form to return to the division; it will become part of your permanent file. Grades will be based on the evaluation form and on your journal, which is due to Mrs. Krueger no later than the Monday of the last week of classes.

Practicum Journal:

The first section of your journal should be a list of topics selected from the Librarian Evaluation Form of the kinds of experiences you feel you most need in order to complete your professional preparation. Be honest, you may need to volunteer to catalog. Share this list with your cooperating librarian(s) so they can provide you with the necessary experiences. Attach a copy of this list to an email message to Karla Krueger and copy the message to your cooperating librarian to confirm the topics no later than the first week of you practicum. This form becomes your contract.

You should leave the practicum experience confident that you can operate a school library. This is the opportunity to see how all of the aspects of your courses work together to form a total program.
