About the Division of School Library Studies
"A library is not a luxury, but one of the necessities of life." --Henry Ward Beecher

The School Library Studies program, which began at UNI in the late 1940's, educates men and women to serve as K-12 teacher librarians, providing the leadership and expertise necessary to facilitate a school's library program as an integral component of the curriculum.

Serving as information specialist, educator, instructional consultant, administrator and manager, the teacher librarian links the information resources from both the local school library as well as distant sources to the information needs and interests of students and staff. Recent graduates have found rewarding experiences in school libraries. Salaries are comparable to those of teachers, with opportunities available to move into administrative and supervisory positions.

Intro Class

Completing the program
The School Library Studies program is distance-friendly, yet retains a sense of identification with UNI and establishes for our students a network of colleagues throughout the state. All course requirements are offered as distance classes except a cataloging and a reference course for endorsement. For the masters, an automation/networking course is also offered on campus every summer. The first required class (350:114g) meets on campus two days; the remainder may be completed off campus. About 18 hours of the program courses are offered on the Iowa Communications Network. Other courses are taught primarily over the Internet.

Those holding a bachelor's degree, but who are not currently certified teachers, may apply for a second BA in Teaching.

Financial Assistance
A limited number of assistantships and scholarships are available. For information and application forms, please call the Program Coordinator.
