The UNI Reading Clinic serves children and adolescents (grades 2—12) with literacy learning needs. The clinic serves as an after-school program at specific school sites in fall and spring semesters and as a morning clinic program at school sites in the summer.
One-to-one remedial tutoring is provided to clients by UNI students enrolled in the course Remedial Reading and the corequisite course Experience in Reading: Tutoring.
All reading tutors are supervised by University faculty and graduate assistants. The tutors conduct assessments and then implement an individually designed instructional program for each client. Tutoring involves 30 contact hours with the client. Clients are referred by participating schools. To participate in the clinic, a client must have the following:
- school application on file
- family application on file
- materials fee submitted
Reading clinic courses are part of a UNI student's coursework related to the Iowa state reading endorsement (for both K-6 and 7-12 reading endorsements). For practicing teachers across the state, the UNI Reading Clinic also offers summer graduate courses in Remedial Reading and in Experience in Reading: Tutoring via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN).
