Students are not required to purchase any software. However, most of the programs used during the course can be downloaded for free or as a trial version.

Inspiration 9

Inspiration is versatile visual learning and thinking software designed for grades 6-12. Download a free 30-day trial version.

Firefox

An excellent free web browser with support for tabs, pop-up window blocking, RSS, and more. You should install Firefox in addition to Internet Explorer or Safari, because it is more compatible with some services such as Google Sites.

Google Sites Google provides free online web page creation requiring very little technical knowledge, and they even host your web sites for free! Signup for a free account at Google Sites (use your UNI Email address to create your account)

Microsoft Office or OpenOffice

Microsoft's ubiquitous suite of productivity applications including MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint. UNI students can purchase Microsoft Office at a discounted price through UNI's Microsoft Select Licensing Agreement. Alternatively, you can download a free open-source alternative to MS Office from www.openoffice.org

Google for Educators Google provides free services including gMail, Blogger, Google Earth, Reader, Picassa, Sites, etc. Visit www.google.com/educators for more information and to sign-up for a free account.
Windows Movie Maker

Free video editing software bundled with all Windows XP and Vista computers. Windows 7 users must download and install version 2.6

Apple iMovie

Free video editing software bundled with Macintosh computers (part of the iLife application suite)

Picassa from Google Free image editing software (Win or Mac) quite similar to iPhoto on Mac. Free web-based photo albums can also be created from within the program.

Adobe Flash Player Adobe Flash Player is required to view many web videos and other content. It will be rewquired to view several RWLD videos and to participate in Coveritlive backchannel discussions during class.

*Students and teachers are eligible to purchase software at a special academic price. In most cases, this academic version is the same product as the full-price version with all features, etc. The only common restriction is that such academic versions may only be used for noncommercial purposes. University Book and Supply sells academic versions of many software titles.

Iowa AEA Online
Iowa AEA Online consists of eight dynamic online resources provided to all Iowa accredited schools by the Iowa Area Education Agencies. These resources are extremely useful for curriculum and methods courses as well as during field experiences and student teaching. Like Iowa's K12 teachers and students, now you have access to these resources at school or at home 24 hours a day, seven days a week! Your login instructions are provided during lab.

    22 volumes, a kids version, a student version, and the Spanish version plus World Book’s three new databases for upper elementary through middle school (Living Green, Inventions and Discoveries, and Early Peoples)
  • EBSCOhost
    magazine, newspaper and reference coverage of science, health, multicultural issues music, politics, history, geography, etc.
  • Atomic Learning
    thousands of tutorial movies answering the common questions people have when learning software programs
  • iClipart
    photos, clipart, fonts, and sounds to use in multimedia projects
  • AP Images
    Associated Press 1840s-present stories, photos and sounds
  • DE Streaming

ITS Educational Technology offers free computer training classes each month on a variety of software applications.
