Inspiration is versatile visual learning and thinking software designed for grades 6-12. Kidspiration is a very similar application designed for grades K-5. Both programs are available as a 30-day trial version. |
Firefox |
An excellent web browser with support for tabs, pop-up window blocking, RSS, and more. This is increasingly being used as a replacement for Internet Explorer as it is highly regarded as generally more safe and secure.

Google provides free online web page creation requiring very little technical knowledge, and they even host your web sites for free! Signup for a free account at Google Sites (use your UNI Email address to create your account) |
Microsoft Office or OpenOffice |
Microsoft's ubiquitous suite of productivity applications including MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint. UNI students can purchase Microsoft Office at a discounted price through UNI's Microsoft Select Licensing Agreement. Alternatively, you can download a free open-source alternative to MS Office from www.openoffice.org |

academic version is the same product as the full-price version with
all features, etc. The only common restriction is that such academic
versions may only be used for noncommercial purposes. University Book
and Supply sells academic versions of many software titles.

Iowa AEA Online
Iowa AEA Online consists of eight dynamic online resources provided to all Iowa accredited schools by the Iowa Area Education Agencies. These resources are extremely useful for curriculum and methods courses as well as during field experiences and student teaching. Like Iowa's K12 teachers and students, now you have access to these resources at school or at home 24 hours a day, seven days a week! Your login instructions are provided during lab.

22 volumes, a kids version, a student
version, and the Spanish version plus World Book’s three new
databases for upper elementary through middle school (Living
Green, Inventions and Discoveries, and Early Peoples)

ITS Educational
Technology offers free computer training classes each month on
a variety of software applications. These workshops provide a terrific
