Extra Credit

You may earn up to 20 points extra credit by attending one of the events or webinars listed below and submitting an essay between 400—500 words addressing all three of the following points:

  1. Summarize the topics covered.
  2. Explain how these topics generally impact teaching and learning.
  3. Describe how you might be able to use these ideas in your future classroom.

Begin your essay with the title and date of the event that you attended. Submit your completed essay as a MS Word document (.doc or .docx) to the Assignments area of eLearning.

You must sign-in and visit two table displays in the morning or watch two presentations in the afternoon then submit your essay as directed above. Sign-in sheets will be posted at the registration desk(s).

Spotlight on Educational Technology focuses on math and science projects that integrate technology in the PreK-12 classroom. The projects to be displayed are winning projects involved in the NCLB Title IIA IMPACT (IMPacting Achievement with Collaborations and Technology) program. IMPACT incorporates the earth-science and inquiry-based GLOBE and STORM projects along with educational technology integration.

The Spotlight Day will involve individual project displays during the Spotlight Gallery (9:30-11:30 am) and also 20-minute project presentations during the Spotlight Presentations (1:00-3:00 pm). These displays and presentations will be given by PreK-12 teachers and their students as they display and talk about how they integrate educational technology into their math and/or science classrooms.

Teacher education faculty and students at UNI are invited to the Spotlight Day to take advantage of the opportunity to interact with these winning PreK-12 teachers and students Find out about the challenges they face as they attempt to integrate technology and new science and/or math based programs into the classroom while still meeting their school’s needs to increase student achievement. Talk with the teachers to hear how their school is attempting to meet NCLB requirements. Talk with the students to hear first-hand how they view using technology as a learning tool. Ask the students how they view hands-on, interactive science and math based programs as means of teaching and learning.

The ITEC Eastern Regional Student Technology Fair is one of three regional fairs sponsored by the Iowa Technology Education Connection (ITEC). It will feature 31 projects from students in grades K-12 representing Cedar Rapids, Mid-Prairie, Price Lab, Western Dubuque Parochial, Fairfield, Linn-Mar, and Maquoketa. We expect about 110 participants.
