Message from the Dean - December 2013

Celebrate the Successes

This fall I have had the opportunity to travel across the state, the nation, and internationally to share the message of the College of Education.  Our consistent message is that we are preparing pre-professionals to educate, serve, and lead.  Our aspirational intent is to lead the state and the nation as the premiere pre-professional preparation institution.  As we focus on this intent internally, we struggle with the juggling of state approval, the Iowa Core, Chapter 79, InTASC standards, cultural competency, technology integration, developmental competency, edTPA, and national accreditation. Yet, we are making consistent progress that is noticed externally.

When I state that I am the dean of the College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa, I am granted instant cache due to our reputation for being an exceptional pre-professional program that has a 100% pass rate on the athletic training certification exam, a 95% placement rate of our graduates, and the preparation of 33% of the teachers in Iowa and 37% of the administrators.  The list is endless when it comes to our accolades, and I encourage all of us to pause and reflect on these successes.

The external reputation is still very strong about the College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa.  As the chief spokesperson for the college, I am always honored and humbled to work at such a legacy place.  Attached to this message are a few of our latest Panther Sports Talk videos.  As you listen to our alumni and our current students, they are proud Panthers and they are continuously grateful for the opportunities that the university and college have afforded them in order to reach and exceed their life goals.  I enjoy these testimonies because they tether me to the purpose of our intent and the success of our actions.

As you enter into the winter break, please take the time to relax, refresh, and rejuvenate, but also contemplate your utility and industry as a member of the College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa.  As you reflect, think of your intent, your purpose, your engagement, your connectivity, your legacy, and your successes.  Please take the time to savor, enjoy, and nestle in the comfort of your successes.  You have earned the right to celebrate.

Dr. Dwight C. Watson, Dean
